from Our Guests
The place over exceeded our expectations. The villa, the landscape and most of all the staff are amazing. We enjoy our daily local breakfast and the team were ever so attentive to us. The kids love the pool and spending the afternoons at the deck trying to catch fish for dinner. The rooms and bathrooms are kept fresh and clean at all times.
Home away from home

The location is great – beautiful view of the lake, quiet and calm, yet only a few minutes by tuktuk to the lovely Hikkaduwa beach, a great place to take surf lessons. The Team took really good care of us – and they have an amazing cook!
Great place for relaxation!

The Team made it an exceptional stay and the food and is exceptional, the menu is open so you have flexibility in what you can order. Which was perfect as we wanted to try different Sri Lankan curries. We were the only guests during our stay, so we effectively had our own personal cook! We didn’t bother eating out because the food was so good. In addition the team goes beyond the extra mile to ensure your stay is perfect and would always ensure we are looked after. The staff would help coordinate activities, trips into the town/beach as well, and would also provide suggestions of what we could do etc.. Also note that this is a lovely former Coconut Plantation House which adds an additional charm to the stay. If you are looking for a secluded property where you feel as if your in rural Sri Lanka with a 5min drive from the beach (+ personal cook) this is the place for you.
Excellent host with amazing food, situated in a peaceful and tranquil location.

The guest house is stunning! The hosts are friendly and very helpful.
Unforgettable experience

I could highlight its beautiful, quiet and exclusive location in Mo River or its lovely, well taste colonial house with only 3 exclusive rooms but the most amazing feature of this Hotel is the service excellence. The staff were the best we could ever have.
Exclusive location and house with the best service, a real luxury experience!

With a 270 degree frontage to the mystical Dodanduwa / Rathgama Lake, the architect remodeled “Walawwa”takes center stage of the property. The House (Walauwwa) is immacultely well annointed and gives a real rustic luxurious feel.
The pictures on the website and on trip advisor do not do justice !!! The garden and surroundings in itself is just picture perfect which just extenuates the overall property.
The food was outstanding : the Sri Lankan dishes goes without saying is a real draw card (even if you are SL). Some of the western dishes we tried were equally good or better.
The staff were oh so hospitable and genuinely warm in every way.
Whether it be frolicking around the pool, kayaking on the lake, boat rides, excursions to hikkaduwa, turtle hatcheries or just curling up with a great book / music (inclusive of the good G&T) just relaxers the body and soul. Make sure you order some finger food while having a nice afternoon or evening drink… a must try.
Kids enjoy the place with an abundance of space and activities… There is a great collection of DVD / movies that keeps them entertained once they exhaust themselves of the outdoors.
Great place to get way for a few days with friends or a must stay on a longer visit to the south coast Keep in mind its just a stones throw to Hikkaduwa and the beach .. so in effect you have the best of both worlds !!
You just cannot say enough to do justice to this property. from its overall beauty,
A simply awesome property, will definitely return…. many times over.
An absolute GEM... Ticks every possible box

We booked this house for a week’s holiday for 2 families of 4 adults & 3 children meeting in Sri Lanka and could not have been happier with our choice. The house is set in a 2 acre garden overlooking a lake with a sitting out deck and a separate jetty for canoeing from (canoe’s provided). The pool is a good size for younger children. The house furnishings and linen are of the highest standard and towels and linen are eplaced regularly during your stay.
The house and our stay was made by the staff there who looks after the house and you during your stay. They are very attentive, extremely helpful and have a great attention to detail so nothing is over looked from mosquito coils in the evenings to water in your rooms. Once you have paid for the villa the cooking is included; you pay for ingredients at market rate and these are bought daily so are totally fresh. We ate seafood, fruit and vegetables in a variety of Sri Lankan styles for a week.
Wonderful in every way

As we went off the beaten track towards the property I wondered if we would find a suitable bolt hole for two days after six nights in Weligama but I need not have worried! The villa is over one hundred years old and has been sympathetically restored by the owners with both antique pieces and modern facilities culminating in feeling a part of the colonial past but with lovely modern bathrooms, wifi and even a sound system through the property.
The staff made us feel very welcome and we had the most amazing food and service throughout our 48 hours there. The chef there should write a cook book! The property was spotless and beautifully presented. The staff went shopping for us and was available if we wanted to go to the beach or anywhere else (we just wanted to stay at the River House!).
We spent our time relaxing at the pool enjoying the serenity of the surroundings – only non-motorised boats are allowed on the river and we waved to the tourists and fishermen who came past the house as they jealously looked at us enjoying our lovely surroundings.
MO River House is a destination property and would be particularly great for a group of friends travelling together.
A slice of paradise away from the beach
Lyren London, England
Mo River House is a beautiful ancestral home by an enchanting lake. The house has been restored to perfection and is luxurious, comfortable and homely. In fact it is a sort of home away from home where all you do is relax and have fun, The food was amazing and consists of a mix of delectable local cuisine and western dishes. And of course, lots and lots of fresh seafood. What’s unique about this place is that although it is located in Hikkaduwa – a southern town famous for its beaches and other seaside attractions, the location is secluded and tucked away on a high knoll above the black water lake. There are lots of activities for the adventurous kind like fishing, catamaran rides and exploring. I spent most of my time relaxing in the outdoor pool and gazing out over the lake. Mo river house is ideal for families, couples and even singles who like some quiet and solitude….
Room Tip: All rooms have beautiful views of the garden and lake… throw open the windows and enjoy the fresh air…
A place surrounded by serenity and nature and yet so much to do and see!
